UNSW Built Environment Construction Management & Property: Ben Iverach

3 04 2009

Hey Guys & Girls!

My name is Ben, and I am currently a 4th year undergraduate student studying in the Bachelor of Construction Management & Property (BCMP) Course at UNSW. I really enjoy studying BCMP at UNSW because the course content is very diverse and interesting and the social lifestyle on campus is great.

The course teaches topics both on management and construction techniques.  Some subjects give students the opportunity to visit large construction sites across Sydney – a great experience. The quality of teaching combined with the learning potential at UNSW Built Environment is well recognised amongst industry employers, which is a great thing when it comes time to look for a career.

I am currently working in the construction industry whilst studying, and I definitely recommend taking the opportunity to gain relevant industry work whilst completing your studies. The BCMP programme is quite flexible and gives students enough time to manage a job as well as study. I work on a $30 million construction project for a new five-level office building. The challenges and experiences that this project provides helps me apply what I’m learning to real life situations.  I now really appreciate the level of detail that teachers at UNSW put into their classes.

As mentioned previously the social aspect of UNSW is great. There are many clubs, societies and sporting teams you can join, which give you great opportunity to do something you enjoy whilst meeting new people on campus. The Construction and Property Society (CAPS) of UNSW holds regular events such as BBQs and bar nights that provide a great opportunity to meet new people in the course as well as industry professionals.  CAPS events also allow students to receive information about the current construction industry and talk about how they can become a part of its future.
